What is hepatorenal disease?

Hepatorenal disease is the manifestation of kidney damage in patients having cirrhosis. It is characterized by reduction in kidney blood flow and glomerular filtration rate.

There are 2 types of hepatorenal disease

  1. HRS is related with rapid kidney failure and excessive production of creatinine
  2. HRS is related with more gradual kidney damage. It advances slowly. Symptoms are subtle.

Symptoms of hepatorenal disease include

  1. Nausea
  2. Confusion
  3. Dementia
  4. Vomiting
  5. Weight gain
  6. Delirium
  7. Jaundice
  8. Swelling in abdomen
  9. Dark-colored urine

Medications known as vasoconstrictors can aid with low blood pressure caused by HRS. Dialysis might be used to enhance the kidney symptoms.

Dialysis is used to eliminate the excess salt, harmful wastes and excess water from the blood.

Liver transplants are the most effective treatment for HRS.
